At Oscar Oglethorpe, we love all things independent eyewear, but improving your vision really starts with quality eye care and protecting your eye health. After all, how much can our outstanding, hand-picked, independent frames and advanced lenses really do for your vision if your eyes aren’t in great shape?
We’re here to help you understand what your eyes are up against over the years. Our experienced Greensboro eye doctor, Melissa Heisler, O.D., will identify potentially serious eye diseases during a comprehensive eye exam before they pose a real threat to your eyesight.
What Eye Conditions Can Eye Exams Catch?
The unfortunate truth is that many eye diseases won’t show any obvious symptoms until they’ve already started to cause vision loss. Dr. Heisler and her team are experts at finding early signs of eye diseases. Here are some of the most common conditions that we help our patients find the best solutions for.
Glaucoma:
“The Silent Thief of Sight”
Glaucoma is called “the silent thief of sight” for good reason: it’s perhaps the most notorious disease that causes vision loss without presenting many symptoms. Glaucoma causes intraocular pressure (IOP) — the pressure inside your eye — to increase, which damages the optic nerve.
As glaucoma progresses, blind spots and tunnel vision will appear, but by the time these impairments are noticeable, they usually can’t be undone. Fortunately, we can catch the earliest signs of glaucoma and help you determine your next steps for slowing or halting its progression.
Retinal Issues:
Partial or Total Vision Loss
The retina, the layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye, is susceptible to multiple eye conditions that can cause irreparable damage and vision loss:
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition in which the macula, a point in the center of the retina, deteriorates. This can lead to loss of central vision and visual distortion.
- Diabetic retinopathy causes blood vessels damaged by diabetes to swell and leak in the retina. This can result in blind spots and blurry vision.
Both of these eye diseases, when left untreated, can lead to blindness. During an eye exam, we can diagnose the onset of retinal issues and help you develop a treatment plan early.
Dry Eye:
Treatable Discomfort
Dry eye syndrome is uncomfortable, frustrating, and can be caused by a wide variety of underlying factors. Dry eye doesn’t just describe when the eye doesn’t make enough tears, but also when the eye makes tears that don’t hydrate well or evaporate too quickly to do their job. You can produce plenty of (bad) tears and still have red, itchy, dehydrated eyes.
Dry eye is entirely treatable once you know you have it. At Oscar Oglethorpe, our team can detect dry eye, isolate the underlying causes, and help you get the eye drops, supplements, or other treatment you need to improve your eye health and quality of life.
Cataract Surgery and LASIK Consultations
We also provide referrals and co-management for LASIK and cataract surgery patients. If you suspect you may have cataracts, or you’re looking for refractive vision correction like LASIK, we can help. Dr. Heisler and her team will go over your eye health with you and help determine what your options are to get the quality eye surgery you deserve.
